My story/Mi historia
Let me tell you of a story of an experience that changed me in a positive way. I hope you have your own story.
I was sitting in my Counseling office on a Thursday afternoon. I didn't have any more clients for that evening so it was a wonderful opportunity to skip out early. I cleaned up the clutter off my desk and picked up my keys. Just then I heard the front door open. I stood and went to my office door to see who had entered. A young man in his 30's, a bit disheveled, leaned up against the door frame. He looked tired and exasperated.
I asked him how I could help him. He moved toward me with a ackward gait and announced that he had taken 2 bus trips and had walked some distance to see me. It was obvious that he was inflicted with cerebral palsy and I struggled to understand his words. He explained that someone suggested he come and see me about some problems he was having with his "situation". He struggled to push the words out of his mouth and I felt bad when I asked him to repeat his statements or questions.
At the end of his presentation he asked if I could help him. Excuses for getting out of this spun through my head...maybe I could tell him that I really had to go....maybe that I had an important meeting elsewhere. I knew it would take at least an hour of phone calls to pile through the myriad of bureaucracy to get this one started. It was 4 p.m. and I'm sure EVERYONE wanted to go home and not contend with this.
He stood silent waiting for my response...my eyes fixed on the front door....he stood between me and THAT door! My brain refocused to the moment and I looked at his face. His eyes were fixed on me. Then it hit me.....I was staring at the eyes of Our Lord Jesus Christ!
Somewhere in my head I heard the words of God proclaim "I sent you my only Son and you refused Him". Oh geeesh...this would not look good on my record if I were ever to reach the Pearly Gates. More ever, who was I.....this great humanitarian....unable to give when giving meant so much! I skirted him into my office and I forged ahead asking him questions and making calls. With little time to spare (it was almost closing time for most offices) I found a wonderful young lady at the County facility who said she could help and we scheduled an appointment for him the following day.
He sighed with relief, thanked me for my time, and scooted out the door.
I ate my humble pie (with coffee and 3 crèmes) and left for the evening.
Entonces me di cuenta .....
